The big surprise was the serendipitous discovery of the ‘anammox’‐process, whereby ammonium is anaerobically oxidized to dinitrogen gas with nitrite as electron acceptor. The early days of our anammox research are the main focus of this article, which describes the struggle of growing and identifying the most peculiar bacteria we ever came across.

Anammox was discovered in 1995 in a wastewater treatment plant in Delft (NL), but now it is clear that it is the main nitrogen cycle process that contributes up to 50% to the removal of fixed nitrogen in the oceans. However, anammox bacteria grow very slowly, with only about 15 generations per year. Anammox stands for Anaerobic Ammonium Oxidation. The process was discovered in the early nineties and has great potential for the removal of ammonia nitrogen in wastewater. The responsible bacteria transform ammonium (NH4+) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) into nitrogen gas (N2) and water (H2O).

The bacteria mediating this process were identified in 1999, and were a great surprise for the scientific community. Anammox is an oxidative process and there appear to be some enzymatic similarities between anammox and aerobic NH 3 oxidation (Strous et al., 2006), the ecological significance of anammox is the same as denitrification, i.e., the loss of fixed N in anoxic environments.
